For the last few seasons, the full-back department has been a tricky situation for Bayern Munich. Alphonso Davies has been injured for half a year. Sacha Boey has struggled to showcase why the club splashed upwards of €30m for him. Hiroki Ito, who can also be deputised at left-back, suffered a similar fate to Davies and has been injured for the majority of his Bayern career. And Raphaël Guerreiro seems more suited to the midfield these days. The only bright spots have been Josip Stanišić and Konrad
Laimer who have proved how valuable their versatility is being able to deputise on the right or left side of defense.
Given the full-back situation, Bayern are reportedly considering bringing in a new player to fill the position. Although, according to Sky’s Florian Plettenberg (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), it will be heavily dependent on Guerreiro and his future at the club.
Max Eberl and Christoph Freund are exploring the market for full-backs. Raphaël Guerreiro’s future beyond next summer depends on whether Bayern will get a new player to be Alphonso Davies’ backup/challenger.
However, Plettenberg reports that Guerreiro’s flexibility is valued by the club and Vincent Kompany, so Bayern may very well hold onto the Portuguese for the duration of the season (via @iMiaSanMia).
As things stand, Bayern are not planning to sell Raphaël Guerreiro in January. The club wants to continue with him until the end of the season as he will be needed due to his flexibility. Vincent Kompany is a fan of the Portuguese player. Future beyond next summer is open.
Guerreiro’s has been an important squad player for Kompany and has came in clutch several times for the Belgian coach — especially considering Davies’ and Musiala’s long-term injuries. It seems highly doubtful that Bayern will let the former Borussia Dortmund player leave in January. However, Guerreiro’s long-term future is still uncertain, and a potential move next season is still a possibility.
Bayern Munich is starting to really hit the rough-and-tumble portion of its first half schedule and Der Klassiker is at the forefront of it all.
Sure, Bayern Munich passed its test against Eintracht Frankfurt before the last international break, but Bundesliga matches against Bayer Leverkusen and SC Freiburg, Champions League games vs. Club Brugge, Paris Saint-Germain, and Arsenal, plus a DFB-Pokal tilt vs. FC Köln all are on tap before the end of November.
In a nutshell, buckle up.
