All offseason, we spent talking about how the San Francisco 49ers would need to weather the storm through the first month so they could get healthy, make a run, and be clicking on all cylinders by the time the second half rolls around.
Change of plans.
George Kittle didn’t make it to
halftime in Week 1. Despite Brock Purdy finishing the game, he sat out of Week 2, and his status remains up in the air for Week 3. Jauan Jennings was held out of the fourth quarter in Week 1, but the Niners were fortunate enough to get him back against the New Orleans Saints — and they needed every bit of production from Jennings.
Mac Jones, Ricky Pearsall, Jennings, Christian McCaffrey, and an offensive line that was underrated coming into the season but has held its own in Week 2 helped San Francisco score 26 points, including an impressive 2-minute drive before halftime.
The defense gave up more than they did against the Saints than against the Seahawks, but ultimately won the game in a similar fashion.
There has been plenty to like on that side of the ball. The defensive line appears to have the potential to be superb. Nick Bosa looks like himself, but he finally has help. Bryce Huff has made an immediate impact, while rookies Mykel Williams and Alfred Collins took substantial steps from week to week in their development.
Fred Warner and Dee Winters look destined to be the best linebacker duo in the league. The secondary was always going to be a work in progress. They are young and will play like it. But with the protection of the front seven and timely plays in coverage, Robert Saleh has the 49ers defense looking closer to a top 10 unit than the team that took the field last year.
