By all accounts, Juventus continue to have faith in starting goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio, but that doesn’t mean that the club is not still very much evaluating him when it comes to his status for the future.
That means these final three or so months are very much an evaluation process when it comes to what the 2026-27 season might look like in goal for the Bianconeri.
What if things change and Di Gregorio’s up and down 2025-26 campaign doesn’t stabilize? Well, as La Gazzetta dello Sport, that is
where things get interesting. It would include Juventus’ front office deciding to bring in a new goalkeeper, with Tottenham and Italy international Guglielmo Vicario being one of the first targets that Juve will try to focus on if they do choose to make a change in goal. Vicario is in his third season with Tottenham, and their struggles domestically the last two seasons — yes, even with a Europa League title thrown in there — could very well convince him that a return to Italy would be the best move for his career as he approaches his 30th birthday in early October.
Who has La Gazzetta also linked with a potential move for Vicario? That would be the team that Juve are playing on Valentine’s Day — Inter, whose current stater in goal in the form of Yann Sommer is on an expiring contract and has a very good chance of leaving San Siro this summer.
La Gazzetta adds that Vicario wouldn’t be cheap by any stretch of the imagination, with a potential €30 million price tag required for any club that is thinking of signing him this coming summer.
Vicario has been Italy’s established No. 2 keeper behind Gianluigi Donnarumma for years now. With Donnarumma moving to Manchester City this past summer, that means both of Italy’s top two goalkeepers currently play in the Premier League. Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret and Atalanta’s Marco Carnesecchi have also been part of the Azzurri’s strong goalkeeper pool.
It is partly because of that as to why Di Gregorio, Serie A’s Goalkeeper of the Year during the 2023-24 season with Monza, has only received a small number of call-ups to the squad.
However, this season Di Gregorio has not seen his form fully kick on like it did during his first year with Juventus after going through some early struggles. Even as Juve’s defense was somewhat of a revolving door in the aftermath of Gleison Bremer’s season-ending knee injury, Di Gregorio got better as the season went on, with decisive late-season saves helping secure Champions League football for the 2025-26 campaign. This year has not had the same kind of feeling as his debut season with Juventus, with his save percentage hovering just below 72% even though he is averaging fewer goals per 90 minutes (0.81) than he did last season (0.97). Di Gregorio’s save percentage during the 2024-25 season was just under 73%.
The 28-year-old Di Gregorio is signed through 2029 and has been linked off and on with a move to the Premier League over the last year.
