Trainer Ben Davison says that while Moses Itauma facing Oleksandr Usyk soon may not be the absolute ideal time frame for the rising young heavyweight star, a chance to face someone who will go down as an all-time great may be hard to pass up.
Davison spoke with Sky Sports’ Toe 2 Toe podcast about the possible fight.
“How many more chances are you going to get to box, potentially, some will say in 20 years time — he has an argument as the best heavyweight ever?” Davison asked.
“How many times are you
going to get the chance to do that in your career? It might be earlier than you would want it to be in a perfect scenario, but I just think, what are you in it for?”
Davison also has noticed the fussing over the possible fight for Itauma (13-0, 11 KO) from those who feel he’s being rushed into a bout with Usyk (24-0, 15 KO), and wonders if boxing fans and pundits can ever really be satisfied.
“When boxing fans complain and argue that people are too protected, cherry picking, protect the ‘0’ — and at the same time we’re saying we’d be willing to take a risk, and people complain about that,” he stated.
