After getting back into the win column last week versus North Carolina, Clemson went on the road to take on Boston College as two touchdown favorites. Like last week, the outcome of the game was never in doubt and the Tigers came away with a 41-10 win.
BC won the toss and deferred. The Tiger drive started with Cade Klubnik handing off and throwing the ball to Adam Randall as they moved into BC territory. They converted a 4th & 1 handing the ball to Peter Woods. A nicely executed screen to Antonio
Williams gave the Tigers a 1st down at the Eagle 35, but the drive stalled and they had to settle for a FG to take the lead 3-0 with 8:34 left in the opening quarter. The Clemson defense completely dominated the BC offense and forced a 3 & out. After the punt, the Tigers took over at their 33.
The Tigers came out firing as Klubnik hit Williams for 25 yards. Two plays later he hit Bryant Wesco Jr. for 22 yards. The drive ended with Randall punching it in from 8 yards out to put Clemson up 10-0 with about 4 minutes left in the quarter. On their drive BC moved the ball effectively into Tiger territory. After they moved inside the 30, the defense got their mojo back and forced the Eagles to settle for a 45-yard FG with about a minute and a half left.
The next Tiger drive started with a 12-yard Klubnik run. Cole Turner took a bubble screen down for 21 yards down to the Eagle 37. Williams took a direct snap and ran for 24 yards to the 14. Shortly thereafter Woods ran it in from 2 yards out to make it 17-3 Tigers with about 13 minutes left in the half. The Eagles came out firing and moved into Tiger territory running a hurry-up scheme. The Tiger seemed helpless to stop them as they moved down to the Clemson 12. The Tigers were the victim of a bad pass interference call on an uncatchable pass in the end zone. With the ball at the 2, BC punched it in to cut the Tiger lead to 17-10.
Randall returned the kickoff to the Tiger 32. A couple of 11-yard passes to Wesco and T.J. Moore put the ball at the Eagle 46. Klubnik hit Wesco for 24 yards to the 16 and later on 3rd & 8, Klubnik scrambled for the 1st down. Two plays later he ran it in to put the Tigers up 24-10 with 5:31 to go before halftime. BC again had their way with the Tiger defense and moved deep into Clemson territory. At the 2-minute timeout they were sitting at the Tiger 22. The defense then came up with a big play when Sammy Brown stripped the ball and T.J. Parker recovered it at the 30.
Klubnik hit Josh Sapp for 32 yards and followed that with a 38-yard strike to Wesco for the score. Clemson was up 31-10 with 1:23 left. BC wasn’t able to do anything with their possession and their was a little drama as the Tigers tried make something of the remaining time. After a review, the Tigers caught the ball at the BC 32 for a 1st down. Nolan Hauser was able to kick a 50-yard FG to give the Tigers a 34-10 lead at halftime.
BC got the ball first but a holding penalty put them in a hole and on 3rd & 12, Jahiem Lawson got a sack to force the punt. The Tigers had a good return but a holding call brought it back and they took over at their 40. They moved into Eagle territory but got to 4th & 3. They were able to convert on a pass to Williams down to the 28. Cade then threw a completely perplexing pass that was intercepted. There wasn’t a Tiger within a mile of the pass.
BC was looking to see if they could get a little momentum going, but the Tiger defense was having none of it and forced a 3 & out. Freshman RB David Eziomume had a 19-yard run on the Tiger drive. Williams had a 17-yard catch to set up 1st & goal at the 7. A few plays later Klubnik ran it up the middle and his leg got twisted up. Chris Vizzina came into the game and two plays later, he threw an interception in the end zone.
BC brought in their backup QB but he wasn’t able to get anything going either and they punted. Clemson muffed the punt and BC recovered at the Tiger 17. Fortunately the Clemson defense limited the damage as Ricardo Jones intercepted it in the end zone on 4th down.
Freshman RB Gideon Davidson had some tough runs on the next Tiger drive. Clemson then turned to runs by Vizzina but he wasn’t able to get enough for a 1st down and the Tigers punted. BC moved inside the Tiger 30 but fell apart after that and turned the ball over on downs.
Keith Adams Jr. came in and looked very impressive as Clemson moved down the field and got to 1st and goal at the 10. Three Adams runs later, the Tigers were in the end zone and had a 41-10 lead. The Tigers kicked off with 24 seconds left. The Eagles ran one play and the clock ran out.
The Tigers stayed on track against a physically outmatched team, but the last 2 weeks have seen solid victories. Next week will be the start of games against better competition and we’ll see if the Tiger resurgence continues. How do you think it will go? Let’s discuss it below. As always, thanks for stopping by STS for coverage of Tiger football.
