Heading into the fifth match week of the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich find themselves sitting in second place in the table, two points behind Borussia Dortmund. Bayern’s 0-0 draw at Schalke remains their only slip-up so far this season, but Dortmund have not put one foot wrong, having won all four of their league matches thus far and all six of their matches across all competitions after losing the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup to Bayern at the end of August.
Niko Kovac was recently critical of the newly
extended international break that just concluded, and he now faces a crucial stretch of matches across all competitions. At the end of the month, the upcoming hectic schedule reaches its zenith with Der Klassiker against Bayern slated for the 31st, shortly before the next international break. By then, the Bundesliga table could look a lot different, but with the way Dortmund have been playing so far this season, Vincent Kompany has said he’s not shocked at all with the level of consistency they’ve shown.
“I’m not surprised that they’re so consistent. Our focus is always narrow, always on the next match. [Bayer] Leverkusen managed 90 points a few years ago; that came out of the blue too. It’s always possible. We simply want to win every match – that’s the priority,” the Belgian manager said in the press conference ahead of Bayern’s Bavarian derby against Augsburg on Saturday (via @iMiaSanMia).
Kompany and Bayern face a key stretch of matches of their own across all competitions, but will be looking to pick up right where they left off with their 7-0 routing of Union Berlin at the Allianz Arena just before the international break.
Bayern will certainly also be buoyed by players like Harry Kane and Michael Olise having sensational international breaks with England and France, respectively. Kompany will also surely welcome the fact that there were no injuries sustained by his players bar Jamal Musiala before Germany’s Nations League match vs. the Netherlands in Amsterdam, though he could be back in action as early as next weekend vs. RB Leipzig.
