We will likely have to wait at least another week to see the Pittsburgh Steelers’ first-round pick make his long-awaited debut. After suffering a shoulder/neck area injury during training camp practice on August 6th, we have learned little information as to what exactly the injury is, and how long it could keep Iheanachor out of action.
While information is still very limited as to the extent of the injury that Iheanachor is dealing with, Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy made it clear that he wouldn’t
count on him playing this coming Friday against the New York Jets.
“He’s making progress. I don’t see him playing this week,” McCarthy said via Jacob Punturi.
When the rookie tackle first suffered the injury, McCarthy seemed to think it would be something that would only keep Iheanachor out for a few days, but that ship has long sailed.
It’s important to keep in mind that players like DK Metcalf, Michael Pittman, and Eli Heidenreich all missed significant time during training camp with injuries that all seem to be minor. The Steelers seem to be taking a more conservative approach with guys who get banged up in the summer than in years past.
Iheanachor showed serious promise early in camp, making the wait for his debut even more frustrating. The strength and technique seemed to be very refined for the tackle who was viewed as more of a “raw” prospect coming out of college. Whenever Iheanachor takes the field for the Steelers, we could be looking at a long-term starter along the offensive line.
