After Manuel Neuer’s retirement from the German national team once again after this summer’s World Cup, the door is open once again for someone to earn the #1 role in goal. While it was Oliver Baumann before the tournament, there could be other names that get that role, at least for the time being under Jürgen Klopp’s new side. Bayern Munich’s Max Eberl had a strong statement to make when asked about Jonas Urbig becoming the future first-choice goalkeeper for Germany.
“That is not my decision to make.
Our assessment is that Jonas has enormous potential. We can very well imagine him becoming Manuel Neuer’s successor at Bayern. Jonas will continue to learn from Manu. I certainly see him as a potential goalkeeper for the German national team. When and in what capacity, I cannot say,” said Eberl on Jonas Urbig becoming Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper in the future, as captured by @iMiaSanMia.
While not a certainty, could we see Urbig jump all the way from 4th in the order under Nagelsmann to the number one choice under Klopp? It’s not unfathomable, especially when you consider that Manuel Neuer has retired, Oliver Baumann isn’t getting any younger, and while Finn Dahmen has been great with Augburg, it doesn’t feel like he will be the future.
Klopp can either start Baumann and start to nurture Noah Atubolu and Jonas Urbig or just immediately give them the keys. It would certainly be fun to watch Urbig be the first choice goalkeeper, and fans will at least see some indication of the future of the position in the upcoming international window.
