Last week, I asked the following question about former Miami Dolphins greats:
If you could choose only one, which former Miami Dolphins player, in their prime, do you believe would translate to today’s game, and why would you place them on the team’s current roster?
Below are some of your thoughts and answers-
Longtimefan points to the greatest QB this team has ever seen.
Dan Marino, and to me it’s not even a close second. Marino was a difference-maker at the most important position in football.
Miami7
says it’s obvious, but I have seen plenty of Phins fans who aren’t as high on Marino as some of us who actually got to see him play.
The question ‘should have’ been stated “other than Marino”….obvious James, no?
Csonka would relegate Achane to a Mercury Morris role (under-utilized by no fault of his own, though Achane as a receiving threat is by far superior).
- Today’s team/roster? I think JT would be the guy.
………..Larry Little was a great response. Kuech is up there too! Warfield (my all-time fave) or Clayton were great as well. With Zach/AJ or Buonicontti, we have a solid LB corps so they’re presence less ‘needed’ currently. Surtain/Madison/X would all be solid answers.
Oldarmyguy went with a guy who hated the Bills so much that he said he would retire rather than play for them.
Bryan Cox for sure. Fits the new culture Hafley wants. Intense player, loyal to team mates (took on Cincinnati bench for a cheap shot at his KICKER !) just a ferocious ILB.
cyberflea says Marino would excel in a league that is now much more QB-friendly.
Everyone has a favorite player. However, there is only one obvious answer to this question and it’s not even close. QB is the single most important position in football and Dan Marino is the greatest player to ever wear a Dolphins uniform. Dan would torch todays QB friendly NFL along with Manning’s TD record among others and with one more game during the season to boot.
MiamiItaliano says your choice is either Marino or go see a shrink.
Dan Marino. Anyone who’s immediate answer isn’t Dan Marino needs to have their brain examined. He would get 60 TDs per year in today’s game.
maddogwi points to some under-the-radar former good-to-great players.
A few perhaps under the radar choices: WR- Irving Fryer, OJ McDuffie or Chris Chambers
CB-Troy Vincent, or JB Brown
dolphinfan4lyfe took us back to the greatness of the 70s and 80s.
My first would have to be Manny Fernandez. The heart and soul for the no name Defense.
Second, Paul Warfield. I mean come on, on a team devoid of WR help, wouldn’t this make sense? Imagine the things that the new guys could learn from him.
Third Jake Scott. 35 ints at Safety for the Dolphins…
Fourth and final is a three piece. Richmond Webb, Dwight Stevenson, and Larry Little. These three on the Offensive Line… it wouldn’t matter what person we had under Center.
Phoenix6 rolled with two offensive greats and one from the defense.
At #1, I choose Dan Marino. He would continue to awe & break records that would stand for 25yrs after he retired.
At #2, I choose Larry Csonka. A Fullback at 6’3″ & 265lbs ‘playing weight’, he too would continue to awe & break bones… & records, in numbers of TDs.
At #3, I choose A.J. Duhe. He was & still could be a hybrid LB/DT/DE. He was a Jets destroyer first & foremost… but a destroyer in general… by blowing up run plays & taking the heads off QBs.
sdphinsfan says: After the obvious, go with Zach Taylor as the QB of the defense. Hopefully lightning strikes twice with a kid out of Texas Tech.
Aside from the obvious choice, I’d go with ZT. Fix the middle of the Defense and you a long way toward fixing the Defense. Alot of other good choices too but I think Zach gives you a bigger bang for your buck…
JUK gives us choices from every position group.
Marino is the only sensible answer, given the importance of the QB position. But here are my other picks (only picking players I’ve watched so mid-80s onwards) for each room:
RBs – Ricky Williams as a nice contrast to Achane
WRs – tough one as there are so many who would improve the room today. I’ll go with Clayton, his TD rate was phenomenal
TEs – I feel like we’ve never had a true great here. Keith Jackson had the biggest reputation but I’m going to go with Bruce Hardy
O line -Richmond Webb, I’m going to trust that one of him and Paul can manage RT
DT – Easy one, Timbo was everything we want Jordan Phillips to be.
Edge – got to be Jason Taylor
LB – Zach and Brooks would be a pretty amazing duo in a modern 4-2-5 defense
CB – Madison over Surtain by a whisker. Howard and Ramsey both disqualified by the no d*ckheads rule
S – close one between Marion and Reshad Jones. I’ll take Brock
PA phinphan is another with a list outside of Marino from various position groups.
If there’s only one we can pick, the obvious answer is Marino. He would set all types of records in this pass happy NFL. However, if we remove him from choices, there are a plethora of players who could help at various positions.
WR – Warfield, the Marks Brothers, or Ol’ Reliable Nat Moore.
DB – Scott, Anderson, Madison, or Surtain.
Edge – JT, Wake, or Stanfill.
O-line – Webb, Little, or Kuechenberg.
Take your pick, they all would help.
D.A says if it’s not Dan, then it has to be Jason.
Other than Marino. Jason Taylor!
Blazer-2334 says he would personally roll with “run Ricky run.”
From a personal level, Ricky Williams. Favorite player ever.
Logical answer Marino, but because that us boring.
A non – Marino Answer…..Chris Chambers…..dude was 800-1k yards a season, when it was a run first league and he had no QB.
Cant imagine him and his 4.3 speed wouldnt cook in this day and age.
MIAMI235 says it’s Marino and then some others.
Marino !
( Csonka , Offerdahl)
Well, I guess the obvious thing happened with Marino carrying the day. If you missed our original post or would like to point out someone not named Marino, please share your thoughts in the comments section below. As always, thank you to each of you who comes here and answers the question of the day.
