There is a difference between having a great season and playing so well that the Ballon d’Or conversation becomes impossible to ignore.
Michael Olise is rapidly approaching the latter.
The Bayern Munich winger has been absolutely outrageous for club and country this season, putting together numbers that would be remarkable for an out-and-out striker, let alone a creative wide player who is also responsible for building attacks, creating chances, and making life miserable for opposing defenders.
In his
16 appearances, Olise has 13 starts, 16 goals, and eight assists. The Frenchman has a goal involvement every 50 minutes per @iMiaSanMia.
Read those numbers again, run your eyes, and then do it again — those are the kind of stats that people cannot ignore.
Olise has contributed to 24 goals in just 16 appearances. He is averaging 1.5 goal contributions per appearance, and he is doing it while making defenders look like they are trying to solve a puzzle with half the pieces missing. Give him space, and he will punish you. Close him down, and he can use his close control, quick feet, and vision to find another way through. Try to anticipate his next move, and there is a good chance he has already thought two steps ahead.
What makes Olise particularly frightening is that his dominance does not depend on scoring. He can take over a match by creating chances, manipulating defensive structures, and finding teammates in positions they could barely imagine reaching themselves. The goals and assists are simply the most obvious evidence of a player who is controlling games at an elite level.
And he is doing all of this without needing to be the loudest personality on the pitch. Olise’s game is remarkably efficient. There is little wasted movement, few unnecessary touches, and an almost absurd calmness when he has the ball. He makes difficult things look routine, which can sometimes obscure just how special they are.
The timing could hardly be better for Bayern Munich. Under Vincent Kompany, Olise has become one of the defining figures in an attack that can overwhelm opponents from virtually every angle. His individual brilliance is complemented by a team that gives him the platform to compete for the biggest prizes in football.
Of course, the Ballon d’Or is not awarded in October based on a spectacular opening stretch. Olise will need to sustain this level throughout the season, deliver in the Champions League’s decisive rounds, and help Bayern Munich win major trophies. International performances with France will matter, too. The competition will be fierce, with names such as Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, and Lamine Yamal all capable of producing extraordinary campaigns.
That is precisely why Olise deserves to be part of the conversation already.
The 2027 Ballon d’Or race is only getting started, and nobody should be surprised if the Frenchman is still standing among the leading contenders when the season reaches its conclusion.
Bayern Munich may already have a Ballon d’Or winner in Kane, but Olise is making a compelling argument that the next one could be wearing the same shirt.
At this rate, calling Michael Olise one of the best players in the world is no longer a bold take. The question is how long it will take before he becomes the favorite to prove it.
