Bad March news as Duke has announced that Caleb Foster has a fractured bone in his foot and will be out “for the foreseeable future.” Additionally, Patrick Ngongba will miss the ACC Tournament, presumably as a precautionary measure.
Aside from everything else, what a blow for Foster. That kid has worked his tail off to prove his doubters wrong, and he’s become a tremendous asset for Duke. He has been resilient though, so hopefully he’ll hold up again.
It’s not the first time Duke has been down this
path. As we noted last night, in 2001, the Blue Devils lost Carlos Boozer for much of the end of the season and survived until he came back, winning the national championship in dominant fashion.
Duke suffered a different blow in 2015, when Coach Mike Krzyzewski kicked Rasheed Sulaimon off the team in January, leaving Duke very thin.
Coach K’s response?
Eight Is Enough – and it was, as Duke won another natty.
A lot of focus will go on Cayden Boozer in the short term, and how he responds will be key. We’ll just remind you that the Boozers tend to win. It’s kind of habitual with both of them.
As for Ngongba, the sooner he’s back, the better. Duke did fine without him Saturday against UNC, but things get thin fast when he’s out. This is a chance for Nik Khamenia to step up, too, and he’s shown a real hard-ass game at times, and his confidence is up, too.
