Jeremiah Estrada entered the game for the San Diego Padres in the top of the seventh inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers with the score tied, 2-2. Estrada was only able to record two outs, but allowed four runs on three hits in his outing and walked off the mound with the Padres trailing the Dodgers, 5-2.
Estrada allowed a single to Andy Pages and walked Michael Conforto to put two runners on. Estrada got Miguel Rojas to fly out to center field, but Dalton Rushing connected on a three-run home run that allowed the Dodgers to take a 5-2 lead over the Padres en route to an 8-2 win at Petco Park, Sunday.
Wandy Peralta replaced Estrada and inherited a runner on first base. Peralta faced Freddie Freeman and allowed a two-run home run that allowed the inherited runner to score and gave Los Angeles a 7-2 lead over San Diego before the final out of the inning.
The Dodgers tacked on a run in the top of the ninth when Shohei Ohtani hit a solo home run to right field off Padres reliever Yuki Matsui to give Los Angeles an 8-2 advantage.
San Diego was able to take a lead in the bottom of the third inning and held that lead until the top of the sixth inning. Padres starting pitcher Nick Pivetta surrendered a solo home run and the lead when Freeman hit a one-out home run to right-center field that just made it over the wall to make the score, 2-2. The homer for Freeman was just the second hit of the day allowed by Pivetta to that point.
Pivetta had a rough start to the game and allowed a leadoff walk to Ohtani, a single to Mookie Betts and a walk to Freeman to start the first inning. Pivetta worked to a 3-1 count against Teoscar Hernandez and allowed a deep drive to center field. Ramon Laureano, who was in center field in place of the injured Jackson Merrill, jumped at the wall and took away a grand slam home run.
Ohtani was able to tag up and score from third base to give the Dodgers a 1-0 lead. Betts was also able to tag up on the play and moved from second to third base to put runners at the corners with one out. Pivetta then struck out Alex Freeland and Pages to end a 30-pitch first inning.
The Padres answered in the bottom of the third against Dodgers starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto. He had not allowed a hit through two innings, but with one out in the top of the third, Jake Cronenworth singled to left field. Elias Diaz followed and swung and missed on a pitch that dropped him to a knee. The next time he took that same swing, the ball jumped off his bat and landed in the left-center field stands to give the Padres a 2-1 lead.
San Diego was unable to add to its total over the remaining six innings. Meanwhile, the top of the Los Angeles lineup that the Padres pitchers had held in check through the first two games of the series, came to life and helped the Dodgers produce seven runs in four innings to avoid the sweep.
With the loss, San Diego falls back into a tie with Los Angeles at the top of the NL West standings. The Padres will try to get back to their winning ways in Seattle against the Mariners, Monday at 6:40 p.m.
