The Knights got off to a great start in Nashville against the Sounds (59-49) by winning the first three games of the series. However, the Sounds did not fold, and they rallied to split the series after a rally in the bottom of the eighth on Sunday.
First baseman Ryan Galanie, 26, just keeps hitting. This is only Galanie’s second weekly award of the season, which is a surprise, given how good he has been at the plate. Against Nashville, Galanie went 8-for-22 with three homers, a triple, three walks, and eight RBIs. That resulted in a 1.326 OPS week, which increased his season OPS with Charlotte to .938 in 75 games. In terms of ERA, Nashville ranks No. 2 among the 20 teams in the International League, but that did not bother Galanie one bit. Given Murakami’s production, there isn’t much need at the MLB level for Galanie, but he is making an excellent case to get his first chance at the highest level.

The Barons look as good as they have all season, winning five of six against the Lookouts (49-53). The only hiccup came on Saturday, when the Barons narrowly avoided being no-hit. However, Birmingham was terrific otherwise, and they outscored the Lookouts, 43-27.
Infielder Colby Shelton, 23, built on his excellent season with another weekly award. This is his second weekly award with the Barons and his fifth overall of the season. After racing out to a very fast start with the Dash, Shelton initially struggled in Double-A, but he has turned it around at the higher level. This week, Shelton went 8-for-20 with four homers, two walks, seven RBIs, and a stolen base in his only attempt. Shelton, who is primarily a second baseman, had a 1.125 OPS in 31 games with the Dash. Although Shelton’s Double-A OPS is .716 through 65 games, it has been trending upward for several weeks. Before this week, Shelton’s Double-A OPS was only .649, and entering July, it was only .567.

If it seems like the Dash have been at approximately 10 games above .500 for several weeks, that is because they have been. Winston-Salem is picking up series split after series split, and this week, they did it in Brooklyn against the Cyclones (42-58).
Catcher Calvin Harris, 24, was fantastic from start to finish in Brooklyn. Harris went 8-for-20 with a homer, a double, five walks, and six RBIs to claim his first weekly award of the season. Across 47 games between Double-A (33 games), High-A (nine games), and the Complex League (five games), Harris is slashing .265/.368/.444, so although this is his first weekly award, he is having a solid season. In particular, during Saturday’s game, Harris’ performance went a long way. During that game, Harris went 3-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs, and the Dash won, 6-3.

The Cannon Ballers got off to a rough start against Salem (43-58), dropping two of the first three. However, Kannapolis righted the ship and won the final three games to take the series. As a result, the middle-of-the-pack Cannon Ballers are back above .500.
There were quite a few reliable Kannapolis pitchers, but reliever Anthony Patterson III, 25, takes the cake. Patterson only allowed one hit across 4 2/3 shutout innings to lower his season ERA to 3.77. Overall, Patterson has been reliable for Kannapolis, and opposing hitters only have a .246 batting average and a .349 slugging percentage against him. While control issues have elevated opposing hitters’ on-base percentage to .354 against him overall, walks weren’t a factor for Patterson against Salem.

Recently, the DSL White Sox have played better than their overall record would suggest. In July, the DSL White Sox went 10-8, but they lost three of five over the past week.
Left-handed pitcher David Colmenares, 18, was fantastic coming out of the bullpen. Effective pitching is hard to find in the Dominican Summer League, and that is especially true for the DSL White Sox, who rank 44th among 51 teams with a 7.57 ERA. As a result, Colmenares gave the squad some much-needed relief, allowing zero runs on three hits in 3 2/3 innings. On top of that, Colmenares struck out five without issuing any walks. Overall, Colmenares has a 3.65 ERA and a 4.09 FIP, which is quite impressive given his age and the high-scoring environment of the DSL. Additionally, opposing hitters have a .385 BABIP against him, suggesting he has experienced tough luck on balls in play.
