25-19, 25-23, 25-18
After a sunny day at Memorial Stadium, Husker fans made their way to the Bob Devaney Center for the 2nd big Husker event of the day. Fans looked depressed and red entering the John Cook Arena, but were ready for some volleyball. Even though football didn’t get the result we wanted, volleyball came in clutch with a sweep of the Arizona Wildcats.
It looks like the student section were given some GBR hats for this match as most of them were sporting them throughout the match tonight.
Do you think they can send me one? Probably not, but I can dream.
We saw, what has been, the normal starting lineup tonight with Olivia Mauch getting the libero jersey for the 3rd match in a row. I have to give a shoutout to Laney Choboy though because it probably is tough, mentally, to lose to libero jersey just after having it for a couple matches. Choboy has still been out there playing her game though and not letting it affect her on the court.
The Huskers came out strong tonight, something they kind of haven’t been doing lately. Especially if you look at the Utah match. They dropped the 1st set of that match and Utah lost to Cal Poly this weekend.
I have to highlight Taylor Landfair because she has been a top player for this Husker squad this year. A lot of Husker fans believed she shouldn’t start……well she proved them wrong. She was one of the girls looking strong right away tonight.
Virginia Adriano also started off right where she left off on Tuesday against Creighton as she was hitting .714% after the 1st set and had 5 kills.
The 1st set may have taken 5 set points to finish, but the Huskers eventually were able to close it out to go up 1-0. Nebraska hit .441% and Arizona hit .258% in that 1st set. Rebekah Allick finished that set hitting perfectly at 1.000% and went 3 for 3.
The 2nd set was much closer as the Huskers didn’t hit as well, but only had a few more errors than they did in the 1st set. Andi Jackson has been pretty quiet in the first couple of sets as she only had 3 kills on 8 attempts at that point. Maisie Boesiger as got in to serve a couple times in the 2nd set as well.
Arizona had the match tied at 17 and Nebraska took a timeout to regroup after losing a couple points in a row to bring the Wildcats back into the match. This timeout didn’t help though as Arizona took the 18-17 lead.
Arizona made it close again, off of some Husker hitting errors, by coming within one at 23-24. Nebraska took a timeout after this to regroup to hopefully end the set. The Huskers got it together though and pulled out the 2nd set win, 25-23. .This time it only took 3 set points to get there.
Nebraska hit much lower this time around at .256% and had 3 more errors in the 2nd, than the 1st, with 7. Arizona also hit a little worse this time around at .216%. Adriano led the team, hitting .429% after the 2nd set, but Murray led in kills, with 10. The 10th kill of hers ended the 2nd set for them.
The Huskers came out in the 3rd looking like they were ready for the night to end pretty quickly as they took a quick 8-3 lead and forced Arizona to take a timeout to try and slow down the Nebraska attack.
Bergen Reilly has been getting way more comfortable with the setter dump lately as she has been contributing to the attack a lot more. She had 2 back-to-back dumps in the 3rd set that were pretty awesome and Arizona didn’t expect it.
Nebraska never lost the lead, even though Arizona started to creep back into it, and swept Arizona to get their 6th sweep of the year to end non-conference play. This match was a good tune up for B1G play beginning and a match against Michigan looming.
Andi Jackson was able to get her numbers up to the standard that she has set for herself in the past couple years with 9 kills, hitting .389% for the match after a little bit of a quiet start.
Nebraska hit way better in the 3rd, and only had 3 errors, at .542%. This helped them achieve a .392% hitting percentage to finish the match tonight. They were able to also hold Arizona to only hitting .250% tonight.
Rebekah Allick led all Husker hitters tonight hitting .571% and Harper Murray led in kills with 14 of them. Adriano ended with 9 kills, hitting .438%.
Nebraska only had 5 blocks tonight, and Allick accounted for 2 of these while Murray, Adriano, and Jackson each had 1.
B1G play will open on Wednesday night for the Huskers as they will welcome the Michigan Wolverines to Lincoln. The match will begin at 6:00pm CST and will be televised on B1G Network.
