Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman has offered an injury update on Frenkie de Jong after the midfielder returned to Barcelona early from international duty.
De Jong played 83 minutes against Poland last time out but was replaced after feeling some discomfort. The Netherlands then subsequently confirmed he was heading back to Barcelona.
Koeman was quizzed about De Jong’s fitness at a press conference and had the following to say about the Barcelona star.
“He had some discomfort during the match,” he told
reporters.
“That’s why we substituted Frenkie. He hadn’t recovered enough to be eligible for tomorrow’s match. We don’t believe it’s very serious, but it was too risky to let him play.”
Koeman’s comments will be of relief at Barcelona as it does not sound like a serious problem for De Jong, although it’s not clear yet if he will be able to play against Valencia next time out.
