When Bayern Munich scored its opening goal in last Friday’s 4-0 win over SV Werder Bremen, Luis Díaz threw his arms up in jubilation — and he appeared to be the goal-scorer. After all, the ball had bounced off of him and into the back of the net.
But when the dust settled, Bayern center-back Jonathan Tah had the credit. Deservedly, too, as it was Tah’s slick backheel that created the result more than anything. Díaz himself seems to agree with the stat recording.
“My teammate was more intentional in what
he wanted to do; he made the gesture to score the goal,” Díaz explained in post-match comments captured by El País Cali, via @iMiaSanMia. “The ball then hit my leg without intention and went in. In the end it was a goal and it was important for us to take the lead. I’m happy to help the team.”
And if you missed it, catch up with that goal and more in the match highlights below:
Bayern Munich was the home side in the Bundesliga on Friday when Werder Bremen came to town.
The Bavarians decimated the visitors 4-0 in a game that was never really close. Bayern Munich was relentless and dominant in every aspect of the match. It is not as if Werder Bremen did not try, but the players just could not match up with the machine that was Bayern Munich.
Let’s get into all of the details — here is what we have on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Postgame Show:
- A look at the starting XI — Tom Bischof and Leon Goretzka got the nod in the central midfield because Joshua Kimmich was sick.
