The Tennessee Titans finally won a football game in Week 6, defeating the Indianapolis Colts 26-20. Robert Saleh’s defense undeniably powered the Nashville-based club to victory. The question goes begging, can Saleh’s defense continue carrying the Titans?
Saleh’s defense forced three turnovers through an Amani Hooker interception, a Jeffery Simmons strip, and a Cor’Dale Flott interception. Flott’s INT was the perfect example of Saleh’s scheme beginning to pay dividends. The cover-man passed off a Colts
receiver smoothly and stepped in front of an ill-advised Jones throw.
The Titans also forced a fourth turnover via special teams. James Williams Sr. and Julius Chestnut combined to block a fourth-quarter punt. It was scooped up by Femi Oladejo and returned for a 14-yard touchdown that completed the comeback, making it 20 unanswered points in a then 20-13 Titans lead. They never trailed again.
Simmons sacked Jones twice. So did Jermaine Johnson II. Tony Adams and Jacob Martin contributed one sack apiece to round out the Titans’ six sacks.
Saleh’s defense covered for another mediocre offensive performance. Quarterback Cam Ward was 11-of-22 for 102 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. The Titans began three second-half offensive possessions from Colts territory. The offense only scored one touchdown. Brian Daboll’s unit was outgained 399-186.
Despite being 1-5, the Titans are now allowing the 13th-fewest points per game. They are tied for ninth in sacks despite lacking elite defensive line talent outside of Jeffery Simmons. You’re really beginning to see the Saleh defense come together.
Saleh’s defense will receive another opportunity to spearhead a victory versus a rather average Cleveland Browns offense in Week 7. The Browns are playing excellent on defense, so we probably shouldn’t expect the Titans offense to get on track against this opponent. No, it’ll take another big-time showing from Saleh’s unit to execute an upset.
