The Mets have traded right-handed pitcher Clay Holmes and outfielder Tyrone Taylor to the Cubs for infield prospect Jefferson Rojas, a 21-year-old who’s played second, third, and short.

Holmes has been on the injured list since suffering a broken leg in mid-May, but he was very, very good in 52.2 innings of work over the course of nine starts this season before that. He had a 2.39 ERA and a 3.21 FIP, excellent numbers in his second season working as a starting pitcher. Last year, in his first major

league season working almost exclusively as a starting pitcher, Holmes had a 3.53 ERA and a 4.11 FIP in 165.2 innings of work.

Taylor had been struggling earlier this season, but he got hot at the right time recently. As a result, he’s hitting .241/.290/.503 with 10 home runs and a 117 wRC+ in 159 plate appearances.

As for Rojas, he’s primarily played shortstop in his relatively brief minor league career thus far, but he has logged significant innings at second and short. He’s played in Double-A exclusively so far this season, and he’s hit .270/.339/.461 with 15 home runs and 17 stolen bases in 22 attempts.
