Welcome back to football season! Your Miami Hurricanes open the 2026 campaign on the road against Stanford. One team has their sights set on contending for championships this season. The other is looking to start a rebuild for the future. That lead has probably given away my outlook how this game will play out, but players will need to make plays for that to come true.
To that end, we’re back with the first Match-up of the week for the Miami Hurricanes. It’s been a few years since I’ve personally
written this piece, and I feel like taking it in a bit of a different direction. So here we go, with the first Match-up of the Week:
Miami’s players and coaches vs “The Standard”
The biggest battle for Miami as they begin a season in which the goal is to compete for, and win, championships is playing to the Standard of Miami football. Every day. Every game. Every drive. Every snap. Every moment. It’s an insane level of focus, yes, but that is what’s required to achieve greatness.
Now, this isn’t to say that there won’t be mistakes along the way. But those need to be mistakes at full speed, intent on doing the job the right way that just go a bit off track. Not the lackadaisical errors, mistakes, and critical failures that have been issues in the past.
I know people hate Mario Cristobal’s “1-0” mantra, but that’s truly the focus we’ll need to finish the job we were 41 yards away from last year: Win the National Championship.
By the time you’re reading this, you’ve seen my prediction that Miami goes 12-0 in the regular season. The only way you get to 12 wins is by starting with 1. And the only way you get there is by playing to The Standard of Miami Hurricanes football.
THAT is the defining matchup of the game, of the week, of the season. And I’m excited to see Miami play in pursuit of that standard, starting with this trip to Stanford.
QB Darian Mensah vs the Stanford pass defense
Not a one-to-one matchup, but the trigger man for Miami’s offense vs the group trying to stop him.
Mensah is extremely talented, incredibly productive, and a 1-to-1 upgrade over Carson Beck, who was Miami’s QB last year. Mensah is among the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy this season, and his campaign would be well served with a strong showing, and some big numbers, in the opener against Stanford.
Miami has a plethora of skill players at their disposal for Mensah to connect with against the Stanford secondary. Superstar sophomore Malachi Toney leads the way, but Cooper Barkate came over from Duke with Mensah this offseason, and is much more dynamic than many people give him credit for being. And there’es plenty more where that came from.
For Stanford, they just faced Hawaii and gave up 279 yards passing and 2 TDs to Micah Alejado. While Alejado is a talented player, and Hawaii runs a passing focused offensive system, neither are the challenge that Mensah and the Miami offense present. While I expect Miami to run the ball with volume and efficiency against Stanford, I’m really looking to the passing game, particularly the vertical passing game, to make a splash in the opener against Stanford.
