Nothing says 4th of July like fireworks (and an Ohio festival in Poland) and, in the NFL, fireworks is a code word for an explosive offensive display. Sadly, the Cleveland Browns have not had a ton of them. In an era of big offense, big passing stats, and big plays, the Browns have been mired in the mundane or worse.
In the past, Cleveland’s rushing attack was the big deal. Jim Brown, Leroy Kelly, Nick Chubb, Kevin Mack, and so many others made their names with the ground game. Perhaps HC Todd Monken
will bring a return of the rushing attack this season with RB Quinshon Judkins.
Thinking back to the most recent fireworks display being put on by the Browns offense, the 2020 matchup versus the Dallas Cowboys comes to mind. In that game, a homecoming of sorts for QB Baker Mayfield and DE Myles Garrett, Cleveland scored 49 points despite Mayfield only throwing for 165 yards.
The boxscore tells an interesting story of WR Odell Beckham Jr.’s excellence:
- 5 catches, 81 yards, 2 TDs
- 2 rushes, 73 yards, 1 TD
RB D’Ernest Johnson led the team with 95 yards rushing while RB Kareem Hunt added 71 yards and two rushing touchdowns. WR Jarvis Landry caught 5 passes for 48 yards and threw one of OBJ’s touchdowns for 37 yards.
The receiver-to-receiver touchdown and Beckham’s 50-yard touchdown run were two of the more explosive plays in the game, one that was tight (3-points) with less than four minutes left. Beckham’s long run put the nail in the coffin: Browns 49, Cowboys 38.
