Oliver Baumann has been a key goalkeeper since EURO 2024, after Manuel Neuer’s retirement and has been gaining traction towards starting in goal for Germany this summer with favorite Marc-Andre ter Stegen out injured. However, in a turn of events it might be Baumann who is sidelined after all.
While reports have been circulating all year about Neuer possibly return to Die Mannschaft for this summer’s World Cup, it appears there was legitimate truth and that Neuer could be getting the call from Nagelsmann
this week to start in goal. Oliver Baumann was recently asked about this but was very confident in his position this summer. Baumann recently had the following to say when asked if he would be going to the World Cup as Germany’s #1 still.
“That was my position – or is my position. I’m going there with a lot of confidence. I don’t know if he (Nagelsmann) will say anything about it tonight [on ZDF]. I have no other information. So that’s my position. Nothing more,” Baumann addressed the goalkeeper dilemma, @sportschau, as captured via @iMiaSanMia.
Baumann is doing the right thing by showing confidence here, but ultimately it might not be enough. With Neuer’s return seemingly immenint it appears as though Baumann might have to stay content with being the #2 behind Neuer this summer.
