Lennart Karl is the talk of the town. Bayern Munich’s best kept secret this summer has gone relatively under the media radar, or at least the global spotlight, until recent weeks. His emergence in the Bayern Munich first
team was simply a matter of time with the raw potential he has already shown, but no one could have predicted this meteoric of a rise.
The 17-year-old has earned a starting role in the Bayern squad, and fans of both Bayern and the German national team have been quick to suggest Karl could play a role with Die Mannschaft. However, it has been reported by Sport Bild that German manager Julian Nagelsmann has yet to contact Karl about a potential call-up. It was even joked in a post-match interview that he should expect a text from the German boss.
While many have been quick to criticize the DFB and Nagelsmann for the lack of communication, fans should rest easy. The next international window is not until March, and lots can change before then. While Nagelsmann has been criticized before, like many other national coaches, for their squad selection, no one would keep a talent such as Karl away from the senior squad if they can sustain his level of performance over time.
It is considered that the call-up is a matter of time, and if Nagelsmann plans on using Karl at next year’s World Cup, March’s friendlies would be the perfect time to see how the Bayern Munich wonderkid fits in with the national team. Could we see an attacking trio of Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala, and Karl behind either Kai Havertz or Nick Woltemade? At their top form, that is an attack that can compete with the absolute world best next summer.
