Lewis Miley added another milestone to his breakthrough season and early career, winning the North East Football Writers’ Association awards dinner on Sunday.
Still just 19, the Newcastle United midfielder made his senior debut for his boyhood club on the final day of the 2023/24 campaign before featuring 26 times in all competitions the following season. This campaign, however, has marked a significant leap for the Geordie.
Miley became Newcastle’s youngest scorer in the Champions League when he found the net at Bayer Leverkusen in December and has earned praise for his performances both in midfield and when used in the defensive line by manager Eddie Howe.
Miley also holds the records as Newcastle’s youngest European debutant and the club’s youngest player to both score and assist in the Premier League.
Already an England Under-21 international, Miley has made 30 appearances this season, scoring three goals, although he is currently sidelined through injury.
Sunderland defender Dan Ballard claimed the Men’s Player of the Year award, ending Newcastle’s four-year streak of winning the prize. Ballard edged out NUFC defender Dan Burn, with Italy international Sandro Tonali finishing third in voting and trailing the aforementioned two.
Former Middlesbrough and Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray received the North East Football Writers’ Association Personality of the Year award, while former Newcastle club photographer Ian Horrocks was presented with the Bob Cass Award for services to football in the region.
