At his worst, no one could stand Bob Knight. He alienated friends, players and bullied people who cared about him.
That wasn’t his only side though, because Knight also was brilliant, well educated and had a tremendous sense of humor.
This was demonstrated quite often but very well at this roast of Joe B. Hall.
For a bit of context, this was not long after Duke lost to Kentucky in the 1978 NCAA championship game. Magic Johnson had just finished his freshman year at Michigan State while Larry Bird was back
in school at Indiana State, both rising stars.
Knight was still young, just 37 and not as embittered as he would eventually grow. You get a sense of what could have been: the immense intelligence, the ability to not take himself too seriously and his friendship with Hall, who was a fishing buddy.
It’s easy to see the Dark Knight, but the other parts of him were quite compelling. If he could have mastered his emotions, he could have been the greatest coach in basketball history.
