It’s weird to say Chelsea Women have been quite underwhelming in a start to the season where they remain unbeaten. Years of Emma Hayes at helm followed by Sonia Bompastor’s debut in which we swept all
domestic trophies set us very high standards beyond regularly getting three points. We also want performances to follow, which is what we aren’t really getting from the Blues this year.
Travelling to Austria to face the team sitting in dead last in the UEFA Women’s Champions League league table, we were due for some goals. The first arrived very fast with Wieke Kaptein scoring off a low cross from Ellie Carpenter.
With Sam Kerr as the starting striker, the Blues were clearly trying to get her to score. Her aim at goal wasn’t helping. It was one of her attacking partners, Catarina Macario, who would double our lead in the first half instead.
Two goals in 45 minutes weren’t enough given the amount of great chances we had in the first half. In the second half we’d start hot with Macario netting a brace from the spot. And Sam Kerr finally got a goal of her own, after beating her markers off a Kaptein pass.
Four wasn’t enough. Before the final whistle, Chelsea got a fifth with an own goal from defender Lisa Ebert as she was in the way of a wayward shot from Lauren James. And they even squeezed a sixth in extra time, with Kerr netting a brace.
Carefree!
- First Chelsea start for Sam Kerr in nearly two years!
- It’s only St. Pölten but it’s so good to have Naomi Girma back and showing why she’s so highly regarded as a player.
- Lauren James is also back!
- Next up: Liverpool away in the Women’s Super League.
- KTBFFH!
