FC Barcelona have flirted with Javi Guerra this summer, but they have not taken the next step. Time is running out, at least if they want to avoid unnecessarily spending 20 million euro more. That’s because Guerra’s release clause will rise from 40 million to 60 million on August 1st, giving Barça just a few days to make up their minds.
According to Spanish radio, Barcelona have spoken with the Valencia midfielder’s agents and Hansi Flick is a fan of him. Despite this, the Catalans have not taken
any subsequent steps to try to sign him. Frenkie de Jong’s injury has also made signing a midfielder more of a priority. Still, Barça are working on several fronts, where deals are expected eventually rather than imminently. That complicates this signing if it has such a sudden deadline.
Guerra also has interest from afar, particularly in Italy and England. The 23-year-old also debuted with Spain, who were recently crowned world champions. That’s made him become even more in demand.
A central midfielder by nature, Guerra can play as a holder and interestingly, has been deployed as a #10 in pre-season for Los Che. He is considered a jack of all trades, as scouts have highlighted his short passing, tackling, through balls, and shooting.
For his part, Guerra has not openly shown a desire to leave. In fact, speaking in May, he publicly declared: “I have a contract. I renewed last year, so I think it’s clear that I want to stay here.”
