In general, the Cleveland Browns offseason has been given very good grades. It has not been perfect, starting with an interesting process during the head coaching search that ended with Todd Monken getting his first chance to lead a team at the NFL level
.For the roster, veteran additions all over the offensive line really highlighted the free agent period, while GM Andrew Berry’s 2026 NFL draft class has been lauded, after a very successful group coming out of the 2025 NFL draft.
The quarterback
question continues to linger, with Deshaun Watson seemingly taking the lead while having a good connection with Monken early in the process.
With a whole lot of good so far this offseason, Brent Sobleski of Bleacher Report gave the Browns a solid “B” grade with an interesting statement to end his first sentence describing Cleveland’s offseason:
Once again, the Cleveland Browns pieced together what looks like an outstanding offseason, while simultaneously not accomplishing what really needs to be done.
At the end of his write-up on the Browns offseason, Sobleski seems to indicate what he meant by “not accomplishing what really needs to be done,” when he noted concerns around hiring Monken and the never-ending need for a quarterback. (Full disclosure: Brent is a friend of mine, so I reached out to him on social media, instead of texting, late Sunday night to seek clarity if I was correct in my assumption here.)
The Monken hire deserves a bit of caution, given that no other team has ever chosen to hire him as a head coach at the NFL level. The quarterback position could have seen other options added (Kyler Murray, Malik Willis, or Kirk Cousins in free agency, Geno Smith in a trade, or Ty Simpson early in the NFL draft), but none of those have any more long-term certainty than Deshaun Watson or Shedeur Sanders.
