Arsenii Sergeev was dominant in the postseason last year en route to the Frozen Four, and he later signed a contract with the Calgary Flames in April. Replacing his production (.919 save percentage and 2.54 GAA) will be a significant challenge for Penn State. Goaltending has been the make-or-break for Guy Gadowsky’s squad for most of the last decade, and poor play in net can sink any hockey team, no matter how strong the forwards and defensemen.
Predicted Depth Chart
The Starter
Kevin Reidler
Shortly after Sergeev left for the pros,
former Omaha goalie and 2022 NHL Draft selection Kevin Reidler transferred to Penn State. He played in only 8 games last season but posted a .920 save percentage and 4-1 record. Behind a stronger defense and forward core that should take pressure off of him, Reidler should have a solid season in net for Penn State.
The Backup
John Seifarth
A former walk-on, John Seifarth appeared in only six games last year, posting a .918 save percentage and 2.49 GAA. He should compete for the starting job, but Reidler has more upside as an NHL prospect.
The Newcomer
Josh Fleming
Josh Fleming arrives in Hockey Valley after spending three seasons in juniors in Quebec, where he played for Acadie-Bathurst. He had a .908 save percentage and 3.08 GAA last season in 53 games played. His save percentage was in the top third among all goalies with at least 10 starts in the QMJHL. He should have a bright future at Penn State, but he will likely be third on the depth chart this season.
