This offseason, the Kansas City Chiefs have stockpiled the defensive backfield with players, especially players with experience as a slot cornerback or Nickel defender.
In free agency, the team signed former Miami Dolphins slot defender Kader Kohou, but he has watched the organization draft Jadon Canady in the fourth round and sign another veteran with starting experience: L’Jarius Sneed.
As Matt Derrick of Chiefs Digest alluded to on the “41 is the mic” podcast, Kohou could get squeezed off the roster
by the end of the preseason if he doesn’t show out in training camp.
Chiefs Offseason Signing Not Guaranteed Roster Spot, Says Insider | Heavy Sports
Derrick went on to add that Kohou has only logged 44 special teams snaps his entire career, fueling the theory that the veteran signing is not long for this Kansas City roster.
“I think there’s room for Canady and Chris Roland-Wallace to find the field,” Derrick concluded, leaving out Kohou entirely. “How well they perform… we’ll see what happens there.
Pro Football Focus’ advanced stats deepen the story, as Walker forced 61 missed tackles, registered 664 yards after contact and logged 33 runs of 10-plus yards. By comparison, Hunt and Isiah Pacheco combined for 40 missed tackles, 759 yards after contact and just 20 runs of 10-plus yards.
Tyquan Thornton Might Be More Important to the Chiefs Than You Think | Sports Illustrated
The Chiefs desperately need more explosive plays
With Xavier Worthy banged up for most of last season and Rashee Rice not being a downfield threat, Thornton was the go-to man for chunk yardage in a passing game that ranked 23rd in explosive play rate at 15.14% (per StatRankings). That was made even more pressing due to the existence of one of football’s worst rushing attacks.
Trey Smith just got challenged by an NFL coach, and it should push him hard in 2026 | A to Z Sports
Fowler also noted that “several voters said he had a down year in 2025.”
Smith had his lowest Pro Football Focus overall offensive mark of his five-year career last season with a 68.5 mark. His run blocking mark was also a career low at 63.0. However, his pass blocking mark was a career best at 75.1. That seems to jive with Fowler’s assessment of the positives of his 2025 season.

The Khosla family entered into a formal agreement to purchase the defending Super Bowl champions for $9.612 billion, ESPN reported on Saturday.
The Khosla family will become the team’s controlling owner, according to a social media post by the Seahawks.
“We are honored to be entrusted as the next stewards of the Seattle Seahawks,” Vinod Khosla said in a statement. “We look forward to building on the winning legacy Paul Allen created and to earning the trust of the Seahawks organization and fans everywhere.”
Stefon Diggs says there is no WR2 in NFL ‘better than me’ | ESPN
Although he admits he’s probably no longer a top-tier wide receiver, Diggs also apparently is confident that he is better than any team’s current No. 2 target.
“My opinion, I can compete with anybody,” Diggs said in a video posted last week to his YouTube channel. “But take those [top wide receivers] as your 1s, right? You can’t name a No. 2 better than me.”
WR Trent Taylor Announces Retirement After Seven-Year NFL Career | 49ers.com
Wide receiver Trent Taylor has announced his retirement from the NFL after seven years. Taylor shared the news on his personal social media, celebrating the moment alongside longtime teammate and friend TE George Kittle.
The San Francisco 49ers selected Taylor in the fifth round, 177th overall, of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Louisiana Tech. He appeared in 15 games as a rookie while recording 43 receptions for 430 yards and two touchdowns.
“The shoe game. NBA does it right,” Crosby told N3ON during a recent livestream, when asked about a rule he’d like to change. “… Players get creative with how they want to be swagged out. In the NFL, you can’t even wear, like, any color that’s off the jersey, which is lowkey lame. … NFL shouldn’t be tripping, bro.”
Crosby then recalled last year’s Week 15 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He wore pink rose-patterned Air Jordan 11s with ‘Ella’ written on the front. It was a tribute to his daughter, Ella Rose. But the NFL didn’t allow it.

Chiefs strike out on top players at key positions in ESPN survey series
After starting only eight games in 2025, Simmons did not do enough to be considered here, but Chiefs Kingdom can see that he has the talent to be in this discussion in the future. He just needs to prove it further and more consistently.
For edge rushers, however, the Chiefs seem to be settled into investing in quantity at the position over quality. Ideally, defensive end George Karlaftis is at least mentioned in this yearly exercise, so his absence is a reminder that Ashton Gillotte and rookie R Mason Thomas are almost as important to the position’s success as Karlaftis.
