What is the story about?

The New York Giants on Monday announced the release of defensive tackle Sam Roberts, thinning their competition for roster spots at that position. The release of Roberts is the corresponding move for the previously reported signing of defensive back J.T. Woods.

Roberts, a sixth-round pick by the New England Patriots in the 2022 NFL Draft, was signed this offseason in the hopes he would add depth to the defensive line. Roberts played for the Atlanta Falcons last season, and had a career-best 18 tackles

in just five games, along with his only career sack.

Roberts, though, missed the entire spring after undergoing surgery for an undisclosed injury. He was in uniform and able to practice throughout the Giants’ 10 workouts in West Virginia, but was not able to make any traction in the competition for roster spots.

Woods has not played in an NFL game since 2023. With Dru Phillips dealing with a knee injury and Jarrick Bernard-Converse having been released, the Giants need Woods to help them practice and to get through Saturday’s preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings.
