Now that Brock Lesnar has returned to WWE, talk has picked up again about a potential retirement match between The Beast and Career Killer GUNTHER.
While GUNTHER – who has retired Goldberg, John Cena, and AJ Styles – is certainly interested in being given the opportunity to end Brock’s career, he recently named another WWE superstar he’d like to retire first: Sheamus.
During an appearance on the Main Event Club podcast, The Ring General was asked during a segment to rank the stars in the order he would
want to retire them. While GUNTHER put Lesnar in the number two spot, followed by Randy Orton at three, he chose Sheamus as the wrestler he would most want to retire.
“The thing with Brock is for publicity and is perfect,” GUNTHER said. “Sheamus, it’s a personal matter. I want to retire him.”
He continued: “Subjectively, they are all good choices. On the main roster, Sheamus was my first big opponent, and he beat me up a lot. He made me earn it. I hope I can kick his ass on the way out.”
Sheamus, who is currently recovering from a shoulder injury, has battled GUNTHER in very physical matches in the past. Among their most memorable matches are when GUNTHER beat The Celtic Warrior at Clash at the Castle in 2022, as well as when he came out on top of a triple threat matcha against Sheamus and Drew McIntyre at WrestleMania 39.
Rounding out the order of names suggested to GUNTHER for retirement matches during the Main Event Club appearance were Rey Mysterio at number four and CM Punk at number five.
Earlier this year, rumors circulated that Lesnar could potentially end his career at SummerSlam 2026, which takes place in his home state of Minnesota, and that his potential opponent would be GUNTHER.
Those rumors momentarily dissipated after Lesnar was defeated by Oba Femi at WrestleMania 42 last month. Following the loss, Lesnar became emotional and left his boots in the center of the ring, as is customary of wrestlers who are marking their retirements. However, rumors of a possible showdown between GUNTHER and Brock were reignited after Lesnar made a shocking return to WWE on May 18’s episode of Raw to attack Femi.
Before GUNTHER has a chance to retire anyone, though, his next scheduled major match comes against Cody Rhodes at Clash in Italy on May 31, in which he will challenge The American Nightmare for the Undisputed WWE Championship.
What do you think, Cagesiders? Would you like to see GUNTHER end Sheamus’ career? How about the other names on his list? Let us know in the comments.
