Remember when the Heisman ceremony used to be appointment viewing? Ah, the 2000s. These days I have to Google to even know what time the ceremony is on (6 PM CT, on ABC.)
Also, remember when the Heisman
ceremony every year would invite four generic quarterbacks and pick one of them? Well, this year, Diego Pavia is a finalist. So is Fernando Mendoza. They play for Vanderbilt and Indiana. (Julian Sayin, Ohio State quarterback, and Jeremiah Love, Notre Dame running back… yeah those are archetypes of Heisman finalists.) Anyway, we’ll find out at some point tonight if Heisman voters got it correct. If the earlier awards are any indication, they will not.
Vanderbilt basketball comes off its ten-day finals break and hosts Central Arkansas, a saltier-than-usual version of themselves — the Purple Bears are ranked 261 in KenPom, after five straight years ranking below 300. If it seems like we’ve played these guys recently, well, we have! November 17, 2023, in fact, a 75-71 win for Vanderbilt. That Central Arkansas team finished the season ranked 340. Vanderbilt beat them by four points. Jerry Stackhouse, everyone!
While I say Central Arkansas is saltier than usual, they’ve also lost by 37 to Arkansas and 40 to North Carolina in their only two games against actual good teams. Also, Vanderbilt is ranked 17 spots higher than North Carolina. I’m shocked that North Carolina never hired Jerry Stackhouse.
