You just knew when you saw Ole Miss favored by 50+ points that there was such a slim chance they would cover that. First two weeks of the season when you are trying to figure things out? Hell yeah. But
10th game of the season, relatively healthy with the College Football Playoff firmly in sight? Nah, let’s put ‘em away at half and let the back ups get some reps.
That’s exactly what the first unit on both sides of the ball did. Trinidad Chambliss looked crisp while Kewan Lacy racked up touchdowns and the defense dominated.
The easy Saturday in Oxford leads us to the four best plays, two best players and five interesting stats from the game.
4 Plays of the Game
Nothing special about the run itself, but this score by Kewan Lacy gave him his 16th rushing touchdown on the season in just 10 games. That tied him with Quinshon Judkins for most rushing touchdowns in a season, with two to go in just the regular season. He might break 20 y’all.
If you forced me to find something negative to say about Trinidad Chambliss this year, it would be the number of deflected passes. Sure he can’t help that he’s little but so is Kyler Murray (a player comp) and he figured out how to avoid a high number of those. But sometimes its better to be lucky than good? Well I believe when luck meets preparation then you have an enhanced ability to take advantage of the opportunity. Winnie Watkins was in the right place at the right time and gave the Rebs a 21-0 lead in the first quarter.
Now this run actually is impressive. It’s like you could have an entire highlight reel of Kewan Lacy breaking off long runs on inside zones. His ability to hit a gap, make a dude (or more) miss and then leave everyone in the dust is ELITE.
It’s plays like these that remind me why I only lasted two years playing football. Talk about terrifying. Princewill Umanmielen is rounding into form down the stretch of the season and the timing couldn’t be any better. Who knows what disaster Florida rolls out at QB but we will need plays like this in the Egg Bowl on Black Friday.
2 Players of the Game
I mean who else other than Kewan Lacy right? Three first half touchdowns brought him into a tie with Judkins for most in a season at Ole Miss. I wish Kiffin would have force fed him the fourth but who am I to tell the master troll what to do? He only had 11 carries for 51 yards to go along with his three touchdowns, but he walked away healthy so we will take it.
The last time we played an non-SEC opponent, Chambliss looked pretty meh. Not this time. All the senior Heisman candidate did was go 29-33, 333 yards and three touchdowns of his own. He was efficient and effective. All you can ask of your leader and he delivered.
5 Interesting Stats
- This is the best start to a season for Ole Miss since the undefeated 1962 team. Neither me nor my parents were alive to see that.
- The Ole Miss offense under Lane Kiffin now has ten more games (29) of 600+ yards than the rest of program history.
- Trinidad Chambliss is now 694 yards away from being just the 10th Ole Miss QB to pass for 3,000 yards in a season, which would knock Bo Wallace out of 10th place.
- Kewan Lacy is now 88 yards from the 10th 1,000 yard rushing season in Ole Miss history, which would knock Cory Philpot out of 10th place.
- If Lacy just meets his per game average of 91.2 over the three guaranteed remaining games, he will end up third in single season rushing history at Ole Miss.
