Before he became globe-trotting UFC contender, the man now known as Ian Machado Garry was simply Ian Garry from Portmarnock, Ireland. And some of the people who knew him well from those days are taking issues with the things Machado Garry has been saying in recent interviews leading up to his welterweight title fight against Islam Makhachev at UFC 330.
During an hour plus interview on the High Performance podcast, Garry was extremely critical of his mother for not supporting his decision to become
an MMA fighter. He also said his parents would hit him with a spoon growing up, which is why he’s such a staunch advocate against corporal punishment.
Under the video, a user by the name of SeanGarry6081 put up a comment claiming to be Ian Garry’s brother. The account, which has existed for 12 years and does match Ian’s brother’s name, accused Ian of turning his back on his family over recent years.
“Ian, you’re not a victim. You act like we were beaten as kids,” the SeanGarry6081 account posted. “We grew up in a middle-class house and had everything we wanted. You’re the type of guy to take money off his parents and never pay them back. I think the word is entitled. We had everything a child could need.”
“Oh no, you got paid to go to college and your mother was stressed. You got flown all over the world with boxing, yet you talk about them not supporting you? Dad personally got involved in your boxing the whole time, even when he was sick and in chronic pain. Do me a favour and explain that one, Ian.”
“We attended every one of your fights, and we always believed you could do it,” the comment continued. “But Layla, who met you when you were only a few fights away from the UFC, is suddenly the one who had faith? No way really you were already there … Missing your grandad’s funeral — was that a real man thing to do? Not even a text, lad. I’m missing something here. ‘World run by Layla’ more like.”
It’s important to note that at this point we haven’t been able to confirm beyond a shadow of a doubt that this account is actually Ian’s brother Sean Garry, and this could be an elaborate fake perpetrated by one of Garry’s many online haters. With the decade old account used to post the comments, it would be an impressive hoax. But those that don’t like Garry and his wife really don’t like them.
Does that include Ian’s brother? We’ll keep you updated as we dig up more information.
