Newcastle United’s summer reached a new, unexpected, delicate stage on Friday, with Arsenal submitting an offer for Brazil international Bruno Guimaraes.
It looks like more and more Premier League clubs want to keep circling Eddie Howe’s best players and the Magpies are reaching a breaking point that might see the club sell their best three players in a span of a month.
According to the BBC’s Sami Mokbel and Ciaran Kelly, Arsenal have held exploratory talks over potential moves not only for Bruno,
but also for Tottenham-linked Sandro Tonali.
The report states that Arsenal want to add one leading central midfielder this summer, with Guimaraes and Tonali among the options actively assessed by the club.
“Arsenal are set to make a move for Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes after holding exploratory talks,” the BBC reported. “The Gunners have looked into approaches for either Guimaraes or his club team-mate Sandro Tonali as they attempt to bolster their midfield.”
Discussions have reportedly taken place with Guimaraes’ camp to establish the conditions of a possible deal, with similar talks also held with Tonali’s representatives.
The Magpies have already rejected a bid of around £80 million from Tottenham for Tonali, and a £60 million offer from Arsenal to sign Bruno.
Following the report, The Telegraph quoted a source connected to Newcastle saying, “We may as well pack up and go home if we sell them both this summer,” as that’d mean losing Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, as well as two of the three midfield starters from the past few seasons.
