Hello CSR! I’m here to break down the biggest storylines to watch following an explosive but disappointing week 1 matchup against the Chicago Bears. The Panthers’ offense had its first week 1 coming out party in years, unfortunately the Bears’ party was much larger. Luckily, everyone else in the NFC South lost, including the Falcons, so this is as good a time as ever for the Panthers to right the ship and improve on the things that did them in the first game of the season.
Offense: More of that, please!
If you looked at the Panthers
offense during week 1 in isolation, you’d think the unit as a whole had a pretty complete game. Sure, there’s always those stops that happen in an NFL game, but even Bryce Young’s lone interception was basically just a decision to go after points in the waning moments of the first half. The offensive line was solid, Jalen Coker and Tetairoa McMillan continued all of their momentum from 2025, and Bryce Young came out aggressive throwing the ball down the field and confident in his decision making. So while the loss was surely demoralizing, the offense cannot dwell on it and must simply come out swinging like they did against the Bears. There will be more opportunity for explosive plays down the field in the passing game, and while the Falcons did hold the Steelers to only 58 rushing cards, Jaylen Warren managed to average 4.6 yards per carry on 1o attempts against them while Aaron Rodgers wasn’t all that effective throwing the ball 40 times. The Panthers should be able to attack this defense in much the same way they attacked the Bears and see success.
Defense: Less of that, please!
Meanwhile, the Panthers defense surrendered 59 points against the Bears, while they ran for close to 300 yards against the unit and Caleb Williams absolutely balled out in the passing game. I wouldn’t expect the Falcons to have the same kind of game passing (more on that later), but Bijan Robinson could very easily give them major issues in the rushing game if this defense can’t lock in here. They need to maintain their assignments, especially on perimeter runs and QB scrambles. Princely Umanmielen, you gotta contain the QB dawg.
But the biggest thing they must eliminate is mental mistakes that cost the defense easy field position. We cannot see defensive linemen jumping offsides on key plays or hitting the quarterback on 3rd and long and causing roughing the passer penalties. In the end, no matter how you felt about the Panthers defense on Sunday, there were several key preventable penalties that cost them the most in a game that was neck and neck going into the 3rd quarter.
X Factor: Uhhh, which quarterback are they playing?
Its been a wild week if you follow along with Falcons news on social media this week. As of right now, Cooper Rush is expected to be starting. But the Falcons coaching staff refuses to reveal their hand so throughout the week there’s been talk of Michael Penix potentially stepping in and starting this week. Both quarterbacks carry with them a vastly different game plan for the defense. The unit came out looking very unprepared at times against the Bears, and that can’t happen this week no matter who the QB is.
