AEW has developed a fan base in Mexico through a TV deal, trading talent with CMLL, and traveling to Arena Mexico for Grand Slam specials the past two years. AEW is continuing to break new ground for themself by expanding the reach to a new city with one of their annual Dynamite specials.
AEW announced that Winter Is Coming will take place in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico on December 9.
Mexico City rightfully receives the most notoriety as the capital of lucha libre in Mexico. Monterrey is a hotbed for action as well with an indie scene and several visits from AAA throughout the year. Winter Is Coming will be at Arena Monterrey, which has a seating capacity of 17,599.
Winter Is Coming is often treated like a one of the biggest television episodes of the year. The debut in 2020 featured Kenny Omega winning the world title from Jon Moxley and Sting’s first appearance. The following year in 2021 saw Hangman Page and Bryan Danielson rumble to a one-hour draw for the world title. In more recent years, the show has seen its fair share of title bouts and Continental Classic tournament matches.
Time will tell what AEW offers for this special taping of Dynamite and Collision. The big question is if Andrade will cash in his Casino Gauntlet contract for a world title shot. On the AEW roster, CMLL world heavyweight champion Hechicero hails from the territory, so it would make sense to offer him a big match. Not to mention lucha libre stars like Mistico and Persephone. The Worlds End PPV is on December 19, so expect Continental Classic contests in Monterrey as well.
