Newcastle United are preparing to open discussions over a fresh contract for captain Bruno Guimaraes, with sporting director Ross Wilson set to play a key role in the talks as part of his ongoing review
of the squad’s long-term structure.
According to The Athletic’s Chris Waugh
, Newcastle have already held preliminary discussions with Guimaraes’ representatives about extending his current deal, which runs until June 2028.The Brazilian midfielder remains central to Eddie Howe’s plans, both as a leader inside the locker room and as one of the Premier League’s most influential midfielders.
Wilson, who took charge of his position at NUFC during the last international break, is overseeing a full audit of player contracts. His early priorities include securing the club’s core players and ensuring Newcastle avoid situations like last season’s Alexander Isak pay dispute.
The audit follows confirmation that Sandro Tonali signed a secret contract extension during his suspension, keeping him under club control through 2030.
For Guimaraes, any potential extension will hinge on balancing his importance with the club’s strict wage framework under Premier League profit and sustainability rules (PSR). While the 27-year-old is already one of the highest-paid players at St James’ Park, Howe is determined to retain him long term.
Newcastle have not won a league match without Guimaraes starting since his full debut in March 2022, a statistic that underlines his influence. A clause inserted into his 2023 extension, which allowed clubs to trigger a £100 million release fee, expired earlier this summer without being activated.
Guimaraes’ importance both on and off the pitch makes his situation a priority as Newcastle continue to stabilize their post-takeover project.
According to the report, Wilson’s plan is to complete a series of extensions across key positions before the end of the campaign, and Guimaraes is expected to be near the top of that list.
