Earlier this year WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio admitted he thought about hanging up his boots six years ago until his son Dominik’s entry into the business inspired him to keep wrestling. When he turned 50 in December, 2024, Mysterio said he hoped to retire from in-ring performing within a couple years. And just a few months ago, the lucha legend told Stephanie McMahon his body was telling him it was time to stop
.It seems WWE is getting that message for Rey as well. At least based on what was
reported today (Oct. 21) on WrestleVotes Radio.
WrestleVotes has heard about “backstage chatter” at WWE about Mysterio possibly retiring next year, in 2027. Being discussed are “ideas on how to present his in-ring farewell.”
As the bumps, miles, and years stacked up, injuries have been a recurring issue for Rey. Medical advances like stem cell treatments have extended his run, but everything we’ve heard from him lines up with Votes’ report.
Plus, seeing as working with Dom was a priority, Mysterio may be angling to work with his daughter. Aalyah graduated college this year, started training, and is already in the WWE system.
If Aalyah becomes a regular presence on NXT, Rey could show up there to cross working with her again off his pre-retirement checklist. He could also keep his AAA General Manager spot, and eventually work with his little girl that way. But I digress…
Assuming Rey Mysterio plans to retire next year, how do you hope WWE creative presents it? Fantasy book below. We also invite you to share about Mysterio’s career in the comments, or talk about the prospect of saying goodbye to one of the most popular and talented luchadors the world has ever known.
