Bayern Munich made a major statement in the Champions League on Thursday, cruising past Bodø/Glimt 5-0 at the Allianz Arena. For Harry Kane, the emphatic victory is another indication that Bayern has the quality to make a serious run in Europe this season.
Kane knows how close Bayern came to reaching the Champions League final last season. The club ultimately fell short in the semifinal, with small details proving decisive. Now, though, Bayern has the benefit of another full season working under Vincent
Kompany and continuing to develop his tactical ideas.
“We were extremely close last season. The semifinal was decided by tiny details. Now we’ve got another year with the coach, understanding his ideas. We’re a threat to any team. We’re humble, but teams will have it tough against us with and without the ball,” Kane said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
That final point could be particularly important for Bayern’s Champions League ambitions. Kompany’s side has shown the ability to overwhelm opponents with possession and attacking quality, but Bayern’s defensive work and pressing can be just as difficult for opponents to handle.
Kane’s comments also reflect the confidence within the Bayern dressing room without crossing into complacency. The striker recognizes that Bayern has the tools to make life difficult for any opponent, while still stressing the importance of remaining humble.
After coming so close last season, Bayern will undoubtedly have its sights set on going one step further this time around. A 5-0 Champions League victory is certainly a strong way to reinforce the belief that this team has the capability to do exactly that.
