Joshua Kimmich not starting for the German national team anymore?
Der Kapitän? El Capitán? Captain Ferocious?
Jürgen Klopp is a bold, bold man.
In recent times, Kimmich has always been the first name on the team sheet for his country. A German national team starting XI without Kimmich simply doesn’t exist, except maybe if the match is of no consequence. And even then, one would have to a massive amount of fortitude to even contemplate benching the midfielder.
Apparently, it seems that coach Klopp is
contemplating that very possibility.
In the Nations League pre-match interview (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Klopp posed the question once again: Is Kimmich not untouchable anymore?
Klopp responded, “The midfield played a very good game against Serbia. But why should one player always play in the future? You also have to be in good form to play. You don’t play for your club if you’re not in form either.”
Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany has tried the Pavlović-Bischof double pivot, which has given mixed results but shown tremendous potential. Bayern fans undoubtedly want to see more of Bischof in the first team as well.
Klopp then emphasized the “need for different types of players.” He explained, “You need leaders, you need players who cover a lot of ground, you need all kinds of players. Fortunately we have more than just three good midfielders.”
Maybe. But more than three world-class central midfielders? Absolutely not.
The list starts and ends with Joshua Kimmich, Tom Bischof, and Aleksandar Pavlović. Bayern remains the supplier of world-class German midfielders.
Will this decision pay off?
