Well at least a little bit of good came out of this one.
Despite Kyle Shanahan saying in his post-game press conference that Jake Moody’s job security was unquestionably safe, the Seattle Seahawks
managed to get the San Francisco 49ers to waive kicker Jake Moody following Sunday’s loss. Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Niners’ former third-round pick is now gone after a frustrating tenure with the organization, lasting just over two seasons in the Bay Area.Prior to the start of this season, Moody converted a paltry 70.6 percent of field goal tries in 2024, converting on just 24 of his 34 attempts over 14 games. Sure enough, Moody’s struggles last season would be a harbinger of what was to come during Sunday’s season opener.
Moody went just one-for-three on field goal attempts against the Seahawks, doinking his first attempt off an upright and with Julian Love blocking a 36-yard try in the third quarter. Needless to say, the 49ers’ victory was in no part thanks to Moody.
It appears as though taking a kicker on Day 2 of the draft has yielded troublesome results—over the last 20 years, only two kickers have been drafted in the second or third round, and neither of them lasted through their second contract. Roberto Aguayo, who was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2016, made just 71 percent of his field goal attempts as a rookie before being waived the following offseason.
Aguayo briefly appeared on a few practice squads over the next few seasons, but never saw any more playing time after 2016. Perhaps the Seahawks have inadvertently exposed the second coming of Roberto Aguayo in Jake Moody.
Either way, ‘Hawks fans can count this as a win.
