Bayern Munich’s ride in the UEFA Champions League came to a premature and shocking ending with a 6-5 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals. What looked like a close contest at the offset was ridden by confusing calls, unsatisfactory performances and overall, ended a night that no Bayern fan would want to remember.
The team and the fans alike, both have voiced their shock and disappointment in the way things went down. Journalist Kerry Hau from Sky Sports, who’d attended the game at the Allianz
was quick to get out a statement from his end.
“Hard to understand how Paris could finish this game with eleven men,” Hau said, via his X handle. This is referring to the controversial penalty call involving former Dortmund star Ousmane Dembélé and Alphonso Davies. “But the truth also includes that too few Bayern players reached their performance maximum today. Except for Luis Díaz, it was too indecisive and imprecise offensively,” he further said.
It has been a persistent complaint that Bayern’s conversion rate leaves a lot to be desired. This in fact, has led them to lag behind in games, even if they were the dominant side. However, the idea that Luis Diaz is somehow the exemption to this is confusing, since the Colombian actually struggles with converting simple tap-ins, while nailing more complex angles and difficult positions.
“PSG were slightly, but decisively, better over both legs,” Hau declared. This is a fair statement considering they did have just a little bit of an X-factor specifically at the back.
As disappointing as all of this has been, we’ll simply have to learn to live with the title of semi-finalists. Big ears has evaded Munich yet again.
