Jamaal Lascelles has completed a permanent move from Newcastle United to Leicester City, ending more than a decade at St James’ Park.
The 32-year-old centre back was made available for transfer despite Newcastle’s defensive injuries, with Fabian Schar ruled out until April following ankle surgery.
Lascelles made 253 appearances for Newcastle after joining from Nottingham Forest in 2014. He captained the club to promotion from the Championship in 2016–17 under Rafa Benitez and remained a senior figure
through multiple Premier League seasons.
However, Lascelles’ playing time declined after Eddie Howe’s appointment in November 2021. Lascelles featured sparingly over the past two seasons and made only two substitute appearances this campaign, the most recent against Arsenal on September 28. Lascelles has not appeared in a matchday squad since November 9.
Speaking after the transfer was confirmed, Howe paid tribute to the former captain.
“Jamaal has been an incredible servant to the football club long before I came,” Howe said. “Captain at a really young age and some very difficult seasons for the football club, some relegation battles where he really had to stand up and lead the group.”
Howe highlighted Lascelles’ leadership and influence within the squad.
“In class, a really strong person, a really strong leader, very vocal,” Howe said. “He had a time where he had to wait for his opportunity, but then ended up playing some unbelievable games for us.”
Howe referenced Lascelles’ role during Newcastle’s Champions League campaign.
“Our Champions League journey, he was pivotal to that and produced some unbelievable performances,” Howe said. “Probably some of the best that I’ve seen him play.”
Howe concluded his remarks by thanking the defender.
“I pay tribute to him and thank him for all his service, everything that he’s given to the team,” Howe said. “He’s a real credit to himself.”
Lascelles joined Leicester with immediate effect, bringing an end to the longest-serving spell in Newcastle’s current squad.
