Moses Itauma’s trainer Ben Davison tells Sky Sports that even despite Itauma having much less experience than undisputed champion Oleksandr Usyk, he would still encourage Itauma to take that bout if it make
itself available as he believes Itauma would present a challenge that Usyk has not yet faced.
“I would take it,” Davison told Sky Sports. “I would. I think it’s a win-win. As much as Moses hasn’t boxed anybody like Usyk, I don’t think Usyk’s boxed anybody like Moses. I think he would openly say that himself.”
Itauma (13-0, 11 KOs) is most recently coming off of a dominant showing against Dillian Whyte last month, stopping him in the first round, which has only propelled his hype train as those wonder where he could go next. Usyk, of course, is about as far as Itauma could possibly go in terms of stepping up his competition, and in that respect Davison says Itauma might as well take his shot.
“It’s something he [Itauma] would be up for. I think he’s got the mindset: if you’re taking a dive [into the deep end] you might as well take the dive. Hopefully we may end up in a world title fight.”
For now Itauma is looking to get back in action before the end of the year but that has proven difficult as Davison says potential opponents such as Jermaine Franklin and Filip Hrgovic aren’t interesting in taking the fight along with many others of the same class. Because of this Davison acknowledges that things are a bit difficult for Itauma at the moment in that regard, and if they aren’t able to secure those kind of fights they may need to take a step down in level for the time being and look for bigger opportunities in 2026.
