Newcastle United has spent much of the summer searching for additions to a squad barren of leaders, but one of the players with a few seasons of St. James’ Park experience under his belt appears certain to remain part of Matthias Jaissle’s plans and take on a bigger role.
William Osula has repeatedly faced questions about his talent and future at Newcastle, including significant interest from Germany starting last summer. Those links followed a proposed move to Eintracht Frankfurt that came close
to completion before ultimately collapsing.
According to FourFourTwo’s Joe Donnohue, Newcastle has now decided against moving the 23-year-old on. Donnohue reported that Osula is set to stay at St. James’ Park for the 2026-27 season and could actually emerge with a considerably larger role than he has previously held.
“William Osula is set to remain at Newcastle United for the upcoming campaign, bringing an end to months of speculation surrounding his future at St. James’ Park,” Donnohue wrote. “FourFourTwo understands Osula could play a central role for Newcastle from the start this season, as opposed to the bit-part function he has carried out in previous campaigns, beginning this weekend against Liverpool.”
The Denmark international finished the campaign with seven goals from eight starts before continuing to feature prominently throughout Jaissle’s first preseason in charge.
This report represents quite the turnaround for a forward who appeared close to leaving Newcastle only months ago because of his raw game and glaringly underwhelming performances in the English top-flight division.
With Jaissle preferring tactical systems featuring two forwards, with an athletic striker capable of running behind defenses and pressing aggressively potentially complementing a player such as Nick Woltemade dropping into deeper areas, Osula might have ample minutes and an opportunity for a breakout season this year.
Newcastle can still strengthen its attack before the Sept. 1 deadline, but Osula no longer appears to be the player who will make way.
How big a role should Jaissle give Osula this season after last campaign? Would you keep trusting him or sell him if the right offer arrives at Newcastle’s table? Let us know in the comments section below.
