Aaron Glenn’s future with the New York Jets is very much up in the air, but the same can’t be said for general manager Darren Mougey.
On the latest episode of the “Jets Collective” podcast, ESPN’s Rich Cimini revealed that his gut tells him that the team “won’t clean house” by firing both the HC and the GM. Also, his gut told him that Mougey will be a key factor in determining who the next HC of the NYJ will be.
Cimini explained more:
“My gut would be that he [Woody Johnson] would allow Mougey to run
the coaching search. Mougey would be the point man, much like Joe Douglas became the guy who hired Robert Saleh. After Joe was there a couple of years and they got rid of [Adam] Gase, they said, ‘Okay, Joe, you’re in charge of hiring the next coach.’ Now, Christopher Johnson sat in on all of those interviews, but it was Joe [who] brought the football expertise to those interviews, and my gut would tell me that Mougey would be in that role running the search.”
To me, Mougey has made his fair share of mistakes and has had his fair share of successes. If a bullet were coming from Woody Johnson in the direction of Mougey, I don’t think I would dive in front of it. However, you can’t just keep switching out coaches and GMs every couple of years. Eventually, you have to make a stand and pick.
Glenn indirectly hired Mougey. Mougey hasn’t gotten a chance to draft a quarterback in the first round, nor has he had a shot to pick a head coach.
If Glenn goes down the road, it appears he is going this season; then sticking with Mougey isn’t the worst idea in the world.
As Jets fans, we can only hope they get it right for the love of everything that is holy!
