The finer points of soccer, or football if you must, are lost on most Americans, present company included. Give us a Eurostep, please, or maybe a step-back three.
That said, the World Cup has, as it always seems to, had moments of just brilliant athleticism. Lionel Messi scoring three goals in one match was spectacular, and one guy pulled off a dazzling move near the goal that would have made Pelé jealous.
Speaking of Pelé, he revolutionized the sport in the 1950s and ’60s, doing things that no one
had ever dreamed of. Together with his Brazilian teammates, Pelé helped invent the concept of the Beautiful Game. Even rubes in the States understood, and still do, that Brazil, at its best, plays with an artistic flair that few can match.
We got a glimpse of that when midfielder Neymar did this bit of magic. To make it even sweeter, he did it right in the face of Messi.
This is what the world thinks of when it thinks of the Brazilian game. What an insanely great play that was! Brazilians will be talking about it for years and years.
