Everton Women will be away from home in their first three out of four WSL games for the upcoming season, and begin with an opener in the capital against newly promoted Crystal Palace on 6 September at the VBS Community Stadium.
The Blues return to Goodison Park a week later when they welcome another new outfit to the top flight in the form of Charlton Athletic, who won a promotion/relegation play-off against Leicester City, followed by two trips the road against West Ham United before the season’s
first Merseyside derby completes the opening month in terms of league fixtures.
The Toffees will have to wait until March 2027 to take on the Reds in the return WSL fixture, but can a campaign that will largely be spent on the road actually benefit Scott Phelan’s team?
Notoriously slow starters, Everton thought that was behind them on the opening day of last season when an Ornella Vignola hattrick sealed a 4-1 win for the Toffees at Anfield, and a dream debut for the Spaniard.
What would follow was a revert to type as the Blues would fail to find a league win until December, pulling off the upset of the season by defeating Chelsea at Kingsmeadow, but even that momentous result couldn’t prevent the inevitable for Brian Sorensen.
The Dane did survive until February however – the same month his team had finally claimed a league win at Goodison – but with just three WSL victories in 14, a change in the managerial hotseat was clearly needed.
Enter former academy graduate Phelan, who would go on to get as many league wins in his opening three games as Sorensen had managed all season, but the Blues would ultimately end the season with just a trio of wins at the Grand Old Lady in what was a frustrating inaugural season for the Toffees in their iconic new home.
But with Phelan ready for his first full season in charge and seven new singings raring to go, can the 2026/27 fixture list help banish a slow start and help improve what has so far been a dismal home record at Goodison for Everton Women?
No doubt, meeting two newly-promoted teams in your opening two games is not ideal, but the Blues were better on the road last season, claiming 14 WSL points on their travels last season compared to just nine at home.
Come October 2025 Everton had already lost two at home and pressure was being acutely felt by players and fans alike at the Grand Old Lady.
And with an away meeting against their city rivals in their opening quartet of league games, the Toffees will be looking to ensure that a positive history remains on their side, having won their last five league games on the road against Liverpool and conceding just once in the process.
If the opening month can yield a positive outcome of points, it can only help boost confidence to embrace Goodison as the home venue.
Either way, Everton Women will need to be accustomed to playing at the ground that was the stamping ground to legendary names such as Dean, Ball, Southall and Sharp pretty quickly, as September’s road trip quickly becomes home time in October, with Phelan’s team playing host in three out of the four fixtures in that month, including visits from new girls Birmingham City and WSL giants Manchester United.
