Today was the official kick off press conference for the June 27 super welterweight title fight between unified champion Xander Zayas defending against Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis. During today’s press event both fighters shared some thoughts on their impending battle and engaged in a little repartee. Check out some excerpts from both with the full video at the top!
Boots on what Zayas doesn’t realize about facing him in the ring
“Like I always say, you can watch me all day but when you get in that ring it’s a whole different story. I’m a lot faster than what you think,
I’m a lot stronger than what you think, my IQ is higher than what you think. He’s in for a long night.”
On believing Zayas is only taking this fight because it’s his most lucrative option at the moment
“Yeah he took the fight but if he’s so confident why didn’t he take the 55/45 to the winner? That shows right there. He’s a good fighter but there’s levels and I’m going to show him why there’s levels.”
Zayas’ response to Boots
“Maybe a fight with you and Vergil could’ve been 55/45 to the winner. With a champion, I have two belts. I’m the only one that has two belts in the division. You want these. I don’t need to fight you, I could’ve fought anybody else.
“[You would’ve done the same thing], you would’ve taken care of your family the same way I want to take care of my family, and that’s part of boxing. At the end of the day, I need to take care of my family. I’m confident that I’m going to beat you June 27th but I’m the champion.
“You’ll see what the 23-year-old brings to the table, June 27.”
